如果这两年，您才开始使用 Linux，就很可能使用 Ubuntu。如果您第一次考虑尝试 Linux时遇到困难，，您无疑应该考虑 Ubuntu。以下是为什么。

选择 Ubuntu 有以下两类理由：快速上手以及长久的生存能力。快速上手，是指使用 Ubuntu 无需指导。花几分钟安装，立刻识别大部分硬件，隐藏 root（根）用户，避免有人弄乱它。接着预设配置，让您马上开始工作。Ubuntu 提供不错的开发者联合平台，OEM 顾客不断增长以及——最重要的——全球庞大的用户基础。

第一，上手部分。

实际上，几乎没有人喜欢安装操作系统。如果您碰到过最多数量的电脑，这可能意味着您在电脑里，那您或许是个例外。但是对于大部分人来说，操作系统安装是个无聊的，有时甚至烦躁的过程，这是绝大多数最终用户都希望避免的。不像大多数其他的发行版*，你可以从 Dell（戴尔）等电脑品牌商得到预装的 Ubuntu，意味着您可以跳过所有安装的障碍，马上在运行的电脑上开始工作。（最近传闻指出 HP 惠普马上也要加入安装 Ubuntu 客户行列。）

如果您选择自己安装 Ubuntu，您可能希望最流行的安装流程之一可以用于任何操作系统。当 Ubuntu 安装过程让您选择自定义硬盘分区时，您也可以马上点击下一步，只需要停下来输入时区、用户名和密码，直到安装完成。您体验到的与 Windows Vista 和 Mac OS X 几乎完全相同。

硬件兼容方面，Ubuntu 牢不可破。这些年来，我安装 Ubuntu 从基于 Power PC 的 Mac 到高端的游戏桌面电脑和一些笔记本。我也找到了一个它不能很容易支持的系统。我个人测试硬件兼容性平台是低端的 Gateway MX3228 笔记本，我经常使用其作为测试系统。（我刚才顺便在上面打字。）它集成 Via UniChrome GPU（图形处理器）、WXGA 显示器、Broadcom 4318 无线网卡、Via 集成声卡以及 Texas Instruments（德州仪器）多媒体读卡器。几乎每次我安装系统，都会碰到点小问题，包括 Windows Vista。花十多分钟从 Gateway 网站下载并安装正确 Vista 驱动，许多 Linux 发行版本也不能够直接显示。即使最新的 Sabayon 版本，其对于硬件支持方面自吹自擂，但对于我这种冷门笔记本也束手无策。但当我为此重装了 Ubuntu，极其少见地花了30多分钟配置所有硬件部分，终于现在机器完美运行。大部分要感谢所有 Ubuntu 论坛上乐于助人的朋友，他们慷慨地分享自己的经验。对于每一个疑难杂症简单地跟随一步一步指令做即可。

因为 Ubuntu 隐藏了 root（根）用户，运行管理员命令需使用 sudo。Ubuntu 保护了新用户自己。这很像 Windows Vista 的用户管理，只有较少的麻烦和更高的安全性。许多其他发行版本仍旧允许用户以 root 登录，对于喜欢乱弄的新手来说可能会带来一场灾难。

安装操作系统只是小部分的电脑经验。事实上，大多数电脑用户从来没有过那样的经历。一旦您第一次启动 Ubuntu，准备狂欢，做些真正的事情。Ubuntu 已经建立了一个高规格的平台带有预先配置好的软件，其中为您提供一个专业规格的办公软件包、强大的图形编辑软件、多功能的相片管理软件、智能的音乐播放器和其它普通人可能需要的软件——一起都准备好，可以马上运行。现在所有主要发行版本都做得同样出色，但我相信 Ubuntu 会掌握好安装所有软件包和避免不必要软件包之间的平衡。如果您遇到想要的软件没有安装，选择 Applications（应用软件） > Add/Remove...（添加/删除...），然后点击它。（或者如果更高级的用户，您可以在 Synaptic Package Manager（新立得软件包管理器）找到继续全部主要开源 Linux 应用软件。）买一台新 Mac 或者 Windows 电脑。在实际开始做事前，您还需要花费数小时安装所有经常用的软件。购买一台预装 Ubuntu 的电脑，您5分钟内就可以开始工作。

注：
* 其中所说的“发行版”是指 Linux 其他发行版本。比如：Fedora(Redhat)、Opensuse、Debian。
另外，对于作者多次提到预装 Ubuntu 品牌机的事，我并不完全支持，毕竟安装也是学习过程的一部分。对于想要真正学习 Linux 的朋友，安装是必须的第一课。

《财富》2008年度世界500强企业排行榜出炉，今年前三甲的企业没有出现太大变化，分别是沃尔玛、埃克森美孚和皇家壳牌。中国企业上榜企业数量达到35家(内地25家、香港4家、台湾6家)。中石化以16名的座次成为排名最高的中国企业。

7月9日晚，美国《财富》杂志在其网站上公布了2008年度世界500强企业排行榜。与去年相比，今年前三甲的企业没有出现太大变化，分别是沃尔玛、埃克森美孚和皇家壳牌。而中国企业则创造了历史最好成绩，上榜企业数量达到35家(内地25家、香港4家、台湾6家)。其中，中石化以16名的座次成为排名最高的中国企业。
从今年榜单来看，美国企业可谓风光黯淡。上榜公司数目从去年的162个下滑至153个，为10年来表现最差。其中，挣扎在信贷危机中的美国金融企业排名陡然下降，华盛顿互惠银行，以及刚刚被美银并购的美国全国金融公司排名都下降了70名。美国消费品公司也受到影响。休闲服装零售商GAP公司和耐克公司甚至被挤出了榜单之外。此外，“最大输家榜”中的好几位都直接受到石油涨价和美国经济衰退冲击，如福特汽车、达美航空、通用汽车和可口可乐等。

“金砖四国”——中国、印度、俄罗斯和巴西，则因石油和钢铁业繁荣多家公司进入500强。中国创造了历年最好成绩，有35家企业入围榜单；其他3国中，印度有7家企业榜上有名，而俄罗斯和巴西各占5家。

除了资源企业外，中国还有许多银行和保险公司上榜，如中国工商银行、中国银行、中国建设银行和中国人寿等。有意思的是，中国多家企业进入了“上升最快”榜单。中国铁路建设、中国铁路工程、中国建筑工程公司等都以超过100名的速度“跑步前进”。这些企业都在“最值得投资的行业”中，包括石油与天然气设备、矿产与原油生产、工程建设等。

不止是中国，整个亚洲经济体这一年都进步惊人，共有124家企业上榜。在全球前200名企业中，就有39家来自亚洲。但也有观点认为，由于许多公司的发展依靠对美出口，美国需求下降可能会为眼前繁荣的景象带来危机。此外，新兴经济体中两位数的通货膨胀率很有可能迫使这些国家的央行提高利率，导致经济衰退。

《财富》杂志日前公布了2008年的美国"财富500强"名单。Google在互联网服务及零售行业中位居第一，总排名150位。

今年的行业排名显示，互联网服务及零售行业营收2007年增长18.5%，增长速度位居所有行业第4。而网络及其他通信设备行业增长速度也排名前10，以15.6%的营收增长率位居第6。

在互联网服务及零售行业，Google以总排名150位居第一。其营收为165.94亿美元，较06年增长56.5%。利润为42.037亿美元，较06年增长36.6%。该行业共有7家公司进入总排名1000，2至7名分别是亚马逊、自由媒体集团、eBay、雅虎、IAC和Expedia。
在计算机软件领域，微软以总排名44高居榜首，甲骨文和赛门铁克紧随其后。在计算机和办公设备领域，惠普总排名14位居第一，随后分别是戴尔和苹果。

IBM以总排名15远远领先行业其他竞争对手，在IT服务领域排名第一。在网络和其他通信设备领域中，摩托罗拉、思科和高通分居前三位，总排名分别为65、71和297。

半导体行业进入前1000排名的公司数量多达23家。英特尔和德州仪器排名前两位，其中英特尔总排名第60。AMD在总排名方面远落后于英特尔，仅排名406位，行业排名第6。

电信运营商排名进入前1000的公司也多达22家，且多家公司排名较高。前三大运营商AT&T、Verizon和Sprint的总排名分别为10、17和58。
